[ On Christmas morning, there will be a box wrapped in gold paper waiting on the doorstep of the Witcher family home. A card on top bears her name in Julie's handwriting, and the inside wishes her a merry Christmas, "or Yule or whatever".

Inside the box are two tiny lanterns on hooks. The earrings hook over the ear rather than through, and the lanterns both hold real miniature flames that flicker. A small strip of paper tucked underneath them explains that if held up in the dark, the fire will cast enough light to actually function as a small light source.
